Methodology
Scope. Analysis covers major onshore natural-gas transmission pipelines commissioned or estimated for 2005–2030. Offshore pipelines are excluded.
Diameter. Benchmark focuses primarily on 36–48″ transmission pipelines, centred around 42″ as a representative diameter for large-capacity gas transmission (~10 bcm/y design case). Selected 56″ Arctic/Sub-Arctic projects are included due to limited availability of comparable northern benchmarks.
CAPEX scope. Project CAPEX includes the pipeline, compressor stations, metering and associated facilities where these costs cannot be reliably separated in published disclosures.
Normalization. Historical CAPEX figures are converted to 2026 USD using applicable historical FX rates and U.S. inflation (CPI). Future projects use the latest sufficiently mature published CAPEX estimate available in 2026.
Data quality. Projects without sufficiently defensible project-specific CAPEX are excluded from the numerical dataset.
Combined projects. Projects are treated as one datapoint where CAPEX cannot reliably be separated — e.g. Trans-Pecos + Comanche Trail.
Arctic/Sub-Arctic. Public cost disclosure is substantially more limited. Bovanenkovo–Ukhta I/II and Kharasavey–Bovanenkovo are excluded from the average because comparable onshore CAPEX cannot be reliably isolated
Mountains. Mountain-project CAPEX may reflect terrain as well as permitting, schedule and execution complexity. The category therefore represents a project benchmark, not a pure geological cost premium.
Averages. Conventional, Mountains and Arctic/Sub-Arctic figures are simple arithmetic means of the included project datapoints and are not weighted by pipeline length, diameter or capacity.
